Review: Crimestoppers: TV's Greatest P.I. Themes

by Dan Goldwasser October 4, 2000
2 / 5 Stars

TV Land and Rhino Records have dug into the television archives to pull together a collection of the "greatest" P.I. themes. While most of the themes might not be as recognizable to a younger crowd, there are enough recognizable themes here to keep everyone happy. Beginning with "The Rockford Files" by Mike Post (who has done more television shows than anyone I can think of off hand), the album gets off to an upbeat start. Lalo Schifrin's classic "Mannix" theme is here, as well as some of the more obscure main theme from "77 Sunset Strip", "Cannon", "Wild Honey", Hawaiian Eye" and "Tenspeed and Brown Shoe".

But it's the inclusion of some of the classics that make this album really enjoyable: "Charlie's Angels", "Vega$", "Hart To Hart", and "Magnum P.I." stand out as some of those worth of attention. But it's the classic "Peter Gunn" theme that is probably the most recognized tune on this album - Henry Mancini's classic theme is so engrained into our collective consciousness that it would have been a crime not to include it on this album. Thankfully, they did! Mancini's other theme, from "Remington Steele" has me confused. I was really hoping for (and expecting) the main title theme from the show, but instead I got a slow jazz number that I remember hearing in the show, but not as the main theme. A bit disappointing, to say the least, but Mancini's smooth stylings are there, and it's still good to hear.

As one would expect, the sound quality is mixed, with some tracks being mono, and others in full stereo. But it's rather disappointing to get "Charlie's Angels" and "Hart to Hart" not only in mono, but also with dialogue and sound effects. I am pretty sure that Mark Snow has the original stereo tapes of "Hart to Hart", so why they couldn't use them is unknown to me, but it would have been nice if they could have gotten them. Running a tad over 30 minutes, this is an album that might be worth picking up if you're collecting television themes, but otherwise it might only have limited appeal.
