Review: Michael Crawford - The Disney Album

by Dan Goldwasser October 5, 2001
2.5 / 5 Stars

The soft yet powerful voice behind the original "Phantom of the Opera" hit musical, Michael Crawford, lends his talents to a few classic Disney songs in the new album "Michael Crawford: The Disney Album".  Songs from Toy Story and Toy Story 2, The Tigger Movie, Pocahontas, Tarzan, Mulan, Dumbo, The Lion King and the Disney musical Aida fill this album with all the soft-rock smoothness you might be craving.

Highlights of the album include Crawford's renditions of "Your Heart Will Lead You Home", "Reflection" and "I Know the Truth".  I couldn't really get into his voice for the Randy Newman songs ("When She Loved Me", "I Will Go Sailing No More"); they just call for that gravely Newman drawl.  Even "You'll Be In My Heart", which has all the energy it needs for the song, just didn't seem to reach the level I was hoping for or expecting.

The "Lion King Medley" isn't too shabby, and the opening number "Colors of the Wind" truly set the tone of the album.  Honestly, this type of album isn't my thing - if I'm going to listen to these songs, there's a 99% chance I'd rather just listen to the original recordings.  But there's an audience for different artists taking on other songs (remember Neil Diamond's "I Dreamed a Dream" from "Les Miserables"?), and I'm sure that there are plenty of people who would enjoy this soft-rock interpretation of these songs.  In that respect, it's not a bad album.  It's just not my thing.
