Review: Ennio Morricone: 50 Movie Theme Hits (Gold Edition)

by Rafael Ruiz December 28, 2006
4.5 / 5 Stars

This isn\'t the first Ennio Morricone album I\'ve reviewed this year - it\'s not even my first Morricone compilation album this year. But it does seem to be the time to throw love his way. You know, with his lifetime achievement Oscar being rewarded next year.

Do an Amazon search for a Morricone "best of" album and you find at least a dozen selections. The best so far was the Fistful of Film Music 2-CD set that came out a decade ago. Since this set is three discs, you\'d chalk it up that this one could be better. But in truth, I would own both releases. 50 Movie Theme Hits is a different compilation with a completely different focus, though they do contain some overlapping material.

This is the best-rounded collection of his Italian works I\'ve seen, with tons of rare hard to find title tracks. His heyday in the 60\'s and 70\'s are the primary emphasis. There\'s an avoidance of his more recent music in America from the last two decades, which is great, because we can get those albums elsewhere. But there are some key tracks missing; I would have like Danger: Diabolik, but with 550 credits to his name, at least 500 films are going to be missed.

There\'s some of Dario Argento\'s early films ("Bird with the Glass Feathers", "The Cat O\' Nine Tails") and Italo Zingarelli ("The Five Man Army"). You also have rarely heard music from his more prestigious work with Gillo Pontecorvo ("Burn!") and Bernardo Bertolucci ("The Conformist"). And of course, some films he did with some guy named Sergio Leone. For Tarantino fans, there\'s the track used in Kill Bill, Vol. 2 ("Revenge of a Gunfighter") for the Bride\'s escape from the grave. Plus there\'s some just awesome odd old tracks (I love the Tom Jones tone of the singer on "Machine Gun McCain").

From what I can tell, these are the original soundtrack recordings. With this many tracks, you get a great example of the variety of work the maestro has done in his still thriving career. I can go into words and words about how great the man is, but I\'ve said them before and anyone who would buy a three-disc set is not a casual fan. And this is a must for the Morricone fan. I made a comment earlier this year about whether or not most compilation releases are worth the effort any more. This set is a supreme example why there\'s still merit in them.
