John Frizzell's music career began at the age of ten with the National Cathedral Choir. He soon moved on to the chorus of the Paris Opera Company under the baton of Sir George Solti, and later sang with the Metropolitan Opera Company. The onset of puberty, however, abruptly ended this early career as a soprano. Frizzell studied further at both the University of Southern California and the Manhattan School of Music, but it was his lessons with jazz guitar luminary Joe Pass that Frizzell credits as inspiring his composing career.
After college, John spent several years working with acclaimed producer, arranger and vibraphonist Michael Mainieri (Carly Simon, Dire Straights, Buddy Rich, Billie Holiday).
At Mainieri's Centerfield Productions Frizzell mastered the Synclavier (the first digital music workstation) and the the rest of the rapidly expanding world of sampling and synthesis. As a synthesist, orchestrator, composer and producer, John worked on a variety of projects for Mainieri, including rap, jazz, and pop records, films and commercials. When John's friend Gil Goldstein suddenly left the project to tour with Pat Metheny, the 25 year old found himself as an orchestrator and synthesist for Academy Award winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto on Oliver Stone's landmark miniseries WILD PALMS.
After hearing his innovative integration of of synthesized sounds with traditional orchestra, Los Angeles producer John Sacret Young lured him to Los Angeles to score the short lived but critically acclaimed television series VR5. There Frizzell met composer James Newton Howard, who mentored the young composer's film career. The two worked together on THE RICH MAN'S WIFE starring Halle Berry and DANTE'S PEAK, directed by Roger Donaldson.
These scores led to John's work on 20th Century Fox's ALIEN RESURRECTION, starring Sigourney Weaver and directed by France's esteemed filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet (AMELIE), and by the late 90's his composing career was in full swing. He composed for Mark Rydell (ON GOLDEN POND) twice, scoring HBO's CRIME OF THE CENTURY and JAMES DEAN, for which James Franco won a Golden Globe. Two films for Mike Judge resulted in MTV Film's first hit BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD DO AMERICA and the cult comedy classic OFFICE SPACE starring Jennifer Aniston and Ron Livingston. In addition, John scored Sally Field's romantic comedy BEAUTIFUL and Kevin Williamson's TEACHING MRS TINGLE and MAFIA! a comedy from director Jim Abrahams.
Continuing his reputation for loyalty, John scored three films for producer Joel Silver: THI3TEEN GHOSTS, GHOST SHIP and CRADLE 2 THE GRAVE. On the last project John collaborated with DMX's producer Damon ‘Grease' Blackman to seamlessy bring rap and film scoring together. In a show of diversity John created a massive score with composer Randy Edelman for Ted Turner and Warner Brothers' GODS AND GENERALS. John's work from this film features violin virtuoso Mark O'Conner and Paddy Maloney, legendery member of the Chieftans.
Recently Frizzell has completed THE WOODS, the anticipated second film from indie film maker Lucky McGee (MAY) for Screemgems. Also near completion is HBO's MRS HARRIS starring Annette Bening with Ben Kingsly. This film depicts the murder of Dr. Herman Tarnower by prep school head mistress Jean Harris. In addition, John's score to the screen adaptation of THE PRIZE WINNER OF DEFIANCE OHIO, starring Julianne Moore and Woody Harrelson features Sean and Sara Watkins of the Grammy Winning band NIckel Creek as solists. This drama from Revolution Studios and directed by Jane Anderson (NORMAL) is due for release in the fall of 2005.
