On June 12 2012, Joseph Trapanese (The Raid: Redemption) will release his original score to the independent feature film Mamitas digitally via Bandcamp.com. The album can be purchased online at joecomposer.bandcamp.com/album/mamitas-original-motion-picture-soundtrack.
Mamitas is about Jordin, (EJ Bonilla) a cocky but charming Latino firebrand. At home he is a doting grandson who can't seem to please his perpetually cranky father. On the day he's suspended for insulting a teacher, Jordin meets Felipa (Veronica Diaz), a bookish, no-nonsense New York girl who sees past the swaggering façade. The two immediately embark on an unlikely friendship that inspires Jordin to find out who he really is.
Trapanese comments that "the score is an intimate companion to this coming of age film. [The director] Nicholas [Ozeki] wanted the score to be with our audience, to speak to everyone and to provide another layer of emotion and depth to his film." Joseph further reflects on his experience scoring 'Mamitas' by stating, "Do you remember high school? If you wanted to be cool, you always had to keep your true feelings veiled. Our score pulls back that veil and looks inside, revealing the true strengths and weaknesses of our players, connecting us to them as human beings."
