Based on the 1957 Tony Award-wining musical of the same name, the 1962 film adaptation of Meredith Wilson's The Music Man has long been considered a classic of musical cinema. Coming at a time where film musicals were less and less popular, The Music Man was critically acclaimed, and one of the biggest hits of the year. Five years ago, the film was selected by the National Film Registry to be preserved in the Library of Congress, and now Warner Brothers Home Video has released a newly restored version of the film on Blu-ray disc....

ALBUM REVIEW: Home of Dark Butterflies

Panu Aaltio, a native of Finland, is a relative newcomer to the film music industry, but already made an impression with his score to the 2008 drama, Home of Dark Butterflies. This film, about a group of boys in foster care on The Island, is a dark film, both in content and the often cold cinematography, by director Dome Karukoski. Aaltio's score captures this dark tone through the use of minor keys and suspended chords, while maintaining a building tension through a moving bass line in the low strings. What is particularly impressive about this score is its ability to evoke the emotions of the story - tension, anger, hope - ...

According to Zimmer, this score is experimental and, like the movie, a little out there. The composer also says that it doesn't sound like anything else. This is true, to a certain extent. The score matches the humorous, quirky style of the film and employs Irish and gypsy-influenced...

MOVIE REVIEW: Gone with the Wind (70th Anniversary 2-disc DVD)

It's a timeless classic, a moving and emotional story about the Old South transformed during the Civil War. 1939's Gone with the Wind still holds the record (when adjusted for inflation) of being the biggest box office hit of all time, and with good reason. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Margaret Mitchell, David O. Selznick's adaptation of Gone with the Wind is well known by now, focusing on Southern belle Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) and her rocky relationship with Rhett Butler (Clark Gable). At times feeling...

MOVIE REVIEW: 2012

With 2012, Roland Emmerich - the current king of modern disaster films - takes on the theory of the end-of-the-world as prophesied by the ancient Maya to take place on December 21, 2012. Starting in 2009, Adrian Helmsley (Chiwetel Ejiofor), an American geologist, discovers from his counterpart in India that the neutrinos from a massive solar flare are heating up the Earth's core, like a microwave, and that this will cause catastrophic results. Over the next three years, the President of the United States (Danny Glover) colludes with other world leaders to build a bunch of "arks", hidden in the Himalayas near China.
MOVIE REVIEW: Road, The

No Country for Old Men was the first exposure I had to the works of Cormac McCarthy, and while I only saw the Oscar-winning film version by the Coen Brothers, I could tell that this guy had some seriously bleak imagery in his head that he was putting forth. His post-apocalyptic Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Road, was adapted into a feature film, directed by John Hillcoat, and it was bleaker than I would have expected....

MOVIE REVIEW: Up (Blu-ray)

Ah, Pixar! It seems that they can do no wrong. Even their weakest films are generally leagues ahead of most studio features, and it all comes down to one thing: story. Yes, that's right, story. If they can get you crying with storyboards and pencil sketches, then it doesn't matter how technically proficient their films are. And yet, they manage to push the boundaries of technology every single time. No exception is their tenth feature film, Up, which has grossed well over $650 million so far....

In the 2002 computer-animated feature Ice Age, we met Manny the wooly mammoth (Ray Romano), a lonely fellow who ends up joining forces with an unlikely group - Sid the ground sloth (John Leguizamo) and Diego the saber-toothed tiger (Denis Leary) - to help return a human baby to its tribe. The success of the film spawned a sequel, 2006's Ice Age: The Meltdown, which introduced a love interest for Manny in the form of female mammoth Ellie (Queen Latifah), as well as some annoying comic relief in the guise of opossums Crash (Seann William Scott) and Eddie (Josh Peck). Now in the third outing, Ice Age: Dawn of the ...

MOVIE REVIEW: Monsters, Inc. (Blu-ray)

When it was first released in 2001, Monsters, Inc. was the fourth feature-length computer animated film from Pixar. Directed by Pete Docter, the film takes a rather unique look at the childhood fear of "monsters under the bed". In the monster world, the city of Monstropolis is powered by children's screams. To help harvest this source of energy is Monsters, Inc., where monsters are able to access children's bedrooms through any of thousands of closet doors which match a bedroom in the human world. (Supposedly the humans are toxic to monsters.) We're introduced to Sulley (John Goodman), a big furry beast of a...

MOVIE REVIEW: Christmas Carol, A

Charles Dickens' classic tale of redemption, A Christmas Carol, has had numerous film adaptations made over the years. Probably the best and most revered one is 1951's Scrooge, starring Alastair Sim as the stingy curmodgeon Ebenezer Scrooge. Now, director Robert Zemeckis - who has eschewed traditional filmmaking techniques for motion-capture technology - brings us a new version of the holiday classic, re-imagined as a 3D "multi-sensory thrill ride". That's a bit of a stretch, really, but this 3D animated version of A Christmas Carol, starring Jim Carrey in the lead roles of Scrooge (in all ages), and two of the...
