ELMER BERNSTEIN From The Terrace FSM 24.99 (71:26) Paul Newman movie from 1960 has magnificent, dramatic orchestral score. Lengthy "Homecoming" music a highlight. Sumptuous main theme, strong Americana stuff. Outstanding album from original stereo masters. http://www.intrada.com/doug/doug1200.htm#terrace FRANK CORDELL Khartoum / Ring Of Bright Water Artemis 003 (UK) 18.99 DANNY ELFMAN Proof Of Life Varese 66208 15.99 (30:13) New Russell Crowe movie carries exciting, flavorful score for orchestra, emphasizing percussion. Excellent music, dynamic recording. Skimpy packaging. ALAIN GORAGUER La Planete Sauvage DC33CD (France) 29.99 CARLO MARTELLI Curse Of The Mummy's Tomb GDI 016 (UK) 19.99 (47:49) 1964 Hammer movie carries strong, dynamic orchestral score, featuring unusually large brass section. More tonal than some Hammer scores. Exotic motifs, exciting action cues highlight. Clear mono sound. MICHEL POLNAREFF La Folie Des Grangeurs Universal 159945 (France) 19.99 NELSON RIDDLE Robin And The 7 Hoods ARZ 104 (Gold disc) 31.99 PHILIPPE SARDE Flic Ou Voyou / Le Guignolo Universal 159899 (France) 19.99 Tess / The Tenant Universal 159898 (France) 19.99 (58:34) Roman Polanski's ambitious filming of Thomas Hardy novel has rich, passionate symphonic score to match (37:20). Evocative and memorable, one of 1979's best. The Tenant, a 1976 Polanski horror movie, gets moody, sometimes dissonant, sometimes melodic orchestral score emphasizing strings. A knockout album! ALAN SILVESTRI What Women Want Sony 61595 (1 score track) 16.99 (44:09) New movie with Mel Gibson gets album of songs and one score track (3:04). Silvestri provides a nice orchestral piece but there's too little here to recommend the disc. MAX STEINER Treasure Of The Sierra Madre Marco Polo 8.225149 (Cond Stromberg) 14.99 (60:15) Legendary movie has stark, dramatic score surrounded by rousing "main" theme, jaunty "prospector" theme, noble "mountain" theme. Everything's here plus alternates and trailer. Magnificent new recording by William Stromberg and Moscow Symphony Orchestra. Bullseye! HANS ZIMMER An Everlasting Piece Varese 66202 15.99 (41:53) Zimmer and The Jigs provide zesty Celtic music for new Barry Levinson movie. Skimpy packaging.
