Review: Ennio Morricone Remixes Volume 2

ENNIO MORRICONE REMIXES VOLUME. 2

Now we tend to review whatever we are given, but sometimes you get your choice of albums to listen to. I say this album lying in the stack and went, "YEAH. I want to review that one!" The first volume was a nice surprise and I still have a few tracks from it on my iPod (especially "Addio de Cheyenne"). This is likewise a second helping of techno-pop goodness.

So yet again several dozen European electronica DJs, artists and mixers take one remixing various pieces from Ennio Morricone's illustrious career. This time it is a huge 2 disk set already released less than a year after the first album came out. With the exception of Swell Session, Volume Two has a new gang of artists taking a shot at it with some bigger names (including the Flaming Lips) and a few Japanese artists (Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Fukutomi of Pizzicato Five fame).  As I said on the review for Vol. 1, I caution people solely looking for a score album. The electronica comes first here and the orchestrated music second.

Like last time, there's a mixture of popular and obscure works. They pull from so many sources that admittedly I haven't even heard the original piece. Someone takes a yet another shot at the theme to The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. Hird does a better job than Swell Session did on Volume One, building a moody bass groove and actually using more of the original tracks. Bandini likewise does a bang up Trip-hop cover of "L' Estasi Dell'Oro (Ecstasy of Gold)" from the same movie).

My name is Nobody is used several times in "ll Mio Nome E Nessuno" and "Mucchio Selvaggio", which is covered twice. On "Mucchio Selvaggio", 2raumwohnung takes an retro 80's snyth approach to the piece while Kahuun is more Big-Beat. And While I lean towards the Kahuaan, both have an infectious beat. And that extends to the entire volume. While the experience wears out its welcome occasionally ("Dal Mare", "Un Uomo Nello Spazio"), the overall experience makes the set a wonderful party album.

The styles vary widely from track to track, but my preference is when the artist mixes in some sort of analog sample of the original track, be it rerecorded or not. These a bit too much distance for me when it is all electronic ("La Ragazza Del Padrec") and is against the spirit of what the album is all about. In my opinion.

Considering Morricone has been involved with over four hundred movie scores, I guess Cinesoundz can produce dozens more of these albums. What else can they do for follow-up volumes? I would love to hear Untouchables or Death Rides a Horse or "Man with a Harmonica" (in fact everything from Once Upon a Time in the West). Just think about what The Mission would sound like remixed. And most of all, when will we hear a cover of Exorcist 2: The Heretic?

And you think I'm joking.
