24th Annual Awards Celebration Salutes Top Film and Television

Composers and Songwriters of 2008

Los Angeles - New York, May 6, 2009:  Composer Carter Burwell will be honored with the prestigious ASCAP Henry Mancini Award for Career Achievement at the 24th Annual ASCAP Film and Television Music Awards, it was announced today by President and Chairman Paul Williams.  The composers and songwriters of the most performed film and television music of 2008 will also be honored at the invitation-only event, taking place May 11, 2009 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, California.

The ASCAP Henry Mancini Award is awarded to composers in recognition of their outstanding achievements and contributions to the world of film and television music.   Previous recipients include John Debney, Mark Isham, Quincy Jones, Michel Legrand, Randy Newman, James Newton Howard, Johnny Mandel, Marc Shaiman, Howard Shore, Alan Silvestri, and Hans Zimmer, among others.

Commenting on the Award to Burwell, ASCAP President and Chairman Paul Williams said:  "Carter's unusual and unique music has been integrated into an astonishing variety of films over the past twenty-five years, from risk-taking independent films to summer blockbusters, earning him much recognition around the world.  We are very proud to celebrate his achievements by honoring him with ASCAP's Henry Mancini Award."

Carter Burwell is one of the most prolific film music composers of his generation.  He has scored more than 70 films and is renowned for his 25-year collaboration with the Coen Brothers, providing music for every film they have made ranging from comedies (O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Raising Arizona, The Hudsucker Proxy) to thrillers (Miller's Crossing, Blood Simple, The Man Who Wasn't There, No Country for Old Men), to mixed genre movies (Fargo, The Big Lebowski, Barton Fink and Burn After Reading).  He has also scored all of the films directed by Spike Jonze, most notably Adaptation and Being John Malkovich.  His other film scores include: And the Band Played On, Conspiracy Theory, Hamlet, The Spanish Prisoner, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, Three Kings and In Bruges.  Burwell's most recent film scores are to the Coen Brothers' film Burn After Reading, and Catherine Hardwicke's vampire romance Twilight.  He is currently working on the Coens' next film A Serious Man, and Spike Jonze's Where The Wild Things Are.
