New horror/thriller gets an intense, exciting orchestral score. There are moody sections but the emphasis here is on action. Pulsating, percussive, dynamic recording. MICKY ERBE / MARIBETH SOLOMON Earth: Final Conflict Sonic Images 278920 16.99 Long-ish album of melodic, often sedate, occasionally bright space music. BENJAMIN FRANKEL Battle Of The Bulge CPO 999696 14.99 -New recording cond Werner Andreas Albert (78 minutes)- One of the great epic scores. New recording by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra improves upon the original recording (done by the New Philharmonia) with superior dynamics, detailed recording, exciting performance. Numerous long cues. Conductor Werner Andreas Albert continues his ongoing cycle of Benjamin Frankel works with this masterpiece. TAKAYUKI HATTORI Godzilla 2000 GNP 8065 13.99 Energetic orchestral score. Rarely heavy-textured. Hattori keeps it moving, sometimes going for pathos, sometimes for excitement. Full orchestral favors brass, woodwinds and piano amongst a few strings and sythesizers. Final track uses original Akira Ifukube theme. 59 minute album. JERRY GOLDSMITH Tora! Tora! Tora! FSM 24.99 Goldsmith in his finest Asian style. Stunning release of the complete original soundtrack in stereo. Massive percussion section, powerfully recorded. Main theme is still one of the most impressive ever. HARRY ROBINSON Twins Of Evil GDI GDI 012 (UK) 24.99 45-minute disc. One of the strongest Hammer scores. Features an unusually rich main title and several powerful sequences. Skillful combination of tonal majesty and eerie dissonance. PHILIPPE SARDE La-Bas Mon Pays SAN 4983572 (France) 29.99 64 minutes. Breezy Sarde score features violin, accordion, strings and rhythm section. Combines upbeat tempos with smooth melodies. Several ethnic source cues pad the album considerably. MICHAEL SMALL Jaws The Revenge (Promo) 19.99 Quotes from the original Jaws theme mingle with Small's own powerhouse score. Magnificent finale fanfare and end credits a highlight. A rich, evocative score from a major under-rated composer. ERNEST TROOST Beat Intrada 7090 13.99 46-minute album. Scored for strings, clarinet, trumpet, alto sax, piano and mallets. Smoky score combines jazz combo sounds with minimalist orchestral music. A unique, darkly melodic, sometimes suspenseful work a new movie with Courtney Love and Kiefer Sutherland. Also has Deep Space Nine (Way Of The Warrior) by Dennis McCarthy, Voyager (Bride Of Chaotica) by David Bell and the Next Generation series finale (All Good Things) by Dennis McCarthy. FRANZ WAXMAN Peyton Place Varese 66070 (Cond Frederic Talgorn) 15.99 Classic score gets decent new performance. Includes 4 tracks not on original RCA album. Justifiably famous main theme is a great showcase for the strings. JOHN WILLIAMS The Patriot Hollywood 62258 16.99 Think "Far And Away" meets "Olympic Spirit". It's Williams doing Americana, doing action. A generous amount of subdued writing too. It's familiar territory but very well done. 72 minutes.
