PINO DONAGGIO Operazione Odissea IMG 498825 (Italy) 24.99 (54:09) 1999 Italian TV movie carries energetic, action-oriented score by Donaggio, conducted by Natale Massara. Rhythmic (though not intense) cues with pretty themes near end. Okay score. JAMES NEWTON HOWARD Unbreakable Hollywood 62290 16.99 (45:29) "The Sixth Sense" team (M. Night Shyamalan/Bruce Willis/James Newton Howard) reunite for brand new thriller. Howard provides haunting, dramatic orchestral score. Moving and melodic. Powerful "Orange Man" music a highlight. MICHEL LEGRAND La Bicyclette Bleue Universal 159846 (France) 29.99 (54:28) Legrand conducts the Orchestre Symphonique De La Radio Slovaque in new France tv movie score. Melodic, at times dramatic music. Strong main theme. MARK McKENZIE The Lost Child Intrada 7091 13.99 (43:08) New Hallmark production receives rich, emotional music by Mark McKenzie. True story of Native American woman's experiences conveyed by warm, incredibly moving theme for orchestra. Sweeping orchestral score colored with haunting solos for clarinet, oboe, flute, harp, classical guitar, cello, piano. Our finest McKenzie album to date. FRANCO PIERSANTI Il Commissario Montalbano IMG 498827 (Italy) 24.99 (74:20) Italian TV movie in several parts (broadcast in 1999 and 2000) has involved string orchestra score. Occasional use of piano, marimba, accordion, clarinet and guitar add other colors to dramatic, sometimes dissonant, sometimes somber score. Rousing, spectacular, multi-layered music covering huge canvas. Strong performance, vibrant recording, detailed liner notes. Listeners may enjoy finding main theme from James Horner's "Glory" started here. TREVOR RABIN The 6th Day Varese 66196 15.99 (39:21) Kinder, gentler Arnold Schwarzenegger still needs highly charged, rhythmic score to run with. Occasional melodies emerge. Orchestra and electronics mix for upbeat, energetic music. Ends with a whimper though, not a bang. NELSON RIDDLE Batman (1966 movie) FSM 24.99 (66:07) First release of 1966 feature soundtrack by Riddle. Bat-action, bat-thrills, bat-tunes. Riddle's fast-paced scoring a signature trademark for popular TV series. Presented in clean, crisp mono. Profuse liner notes add to great package. Also has original Neal Hefti TV theme. RYUICHI SAKAMOTO Taboo (Gohatto) Milan 35928 15.99 (64:58) U.S. issue. Samurai/thriller scored for strings, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, piano, sho and percussion. Herrmann-influenced in style, phrasing. Numerous unusual atonal, percussive sections. Dark and eerie. GERARD SCHURMANN The Lost Continent GDI 015 (UK) 24.99 (64:49) Terrific music for expensive 1968 Hammer production. Monsters, killer seaweed, lots of water. Evocative, exciting music to match. Beautiful English pastoral music a brief, welcome highlight. Strong presentation of original mono tracks also has 3-minute conversation with composer. Wide range of dramatic music. First half: haunting, melodic music for orchestra, chorus. Second half: intense, eerie dissonance. Excellent album.
