In order to qualify for eligibility, the composer must submit his or her original score for consideration, and the score must be a substantial body of music that serves as original dramatic underscoring. It must be written specifically for the motion picture by composer. Scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other preexisting music, diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs, or assembled from the music of more than one composer shall not be eligible.

This year, Christophe Beck submitted the most movies for consideration with four distinct scores (The Hangover Part III, The Internship, R.I.P.D., and Runner Runner). Steve Jablonsky, Brian Tyler, Hans Zimmer, Ilan Eshkeri, and Henry Jackman submitted three scores each. And the following composers submitted two scores for consideration: Marco Beltrami, John Debney, Danny Elfman, Thomas Newman, Theodore Shapiro, Heitor Pereira, Marcelo Zarvos, Atli Orvarsson, Roque Banos, Abel Korzeniowski, Joseph Bishara, Nick Urata, and Laurent Eyquem.

A Reminder List of works submitted in the Original Score category will be made available with a nominations ballot to all members of the Music Branch of the Academy, who shall vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements. The five achievements receiving the highest number of votes will become the nominations for final voting for the award.
