Review: In Session: A Film Music Celebration

by Dan Goldwasser April 18, 2001
3.5 / 5 Stars

For Varese Sarabande's 500th CD release, they (rather, Robert Townson) decided to release a 2-disc set of the best of the re-recordings that they had undertaken over the past few years.  From Alex North's 2001 to Joel McNeely's Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, cues from 36 soundtracks make an appearance on this compilation set.  While the music focuses heavily on works by Alex North, Bernard Herrmann, John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith, there is enough variety to keep the listener interested in the music.

All of the tracks on this compilation are available in their original release form, from Varese.  That is to say, think of this album as a sample CD, giving you a taste of the wonderful variety of film music that Townson has had restored and re-recorded for us to enjoy.  Highlights include "Salaambo's Aria" from Citizen Kane; "Stan Meets Blanche" from A Streetcar Named Desire; "Prelude and Rooftop" from Vertigo; "End Title" from To Kill A Mockingbird; "Entr'acte" from Patton; "The Enterprise" from Star Trek: The Motion Picture; "Main Title" from Body Heat; "Xizor's Theme" from Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire and "Ride of the Cossacks" from Taras Bulba.

These recordings might not be the same as the original soundtrack releases, but people capable and qualified to interpret the scores conducted them all.  Joel McNeely, Jerry Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein, Cliff Eidelman, John Debney, Frederic Talgorn, Rick Wentworth and even Georges Delerue all conduct tracks on this compilation.  But ironically the best part about this set isn't necessarily the music.  It's the liner notes by Robert Townson, detailing in his own words how he got each and every project re-recorded.  From problems they had to sessions that went smooth as silk, they're all recounted here in a 27-page booklet that is enhanced with photographs from the sessions.  You can tell just by reading this that Townson has a pure love of film music that is unmatched.  No matter what you might think of the re-recording quality, or the performances of the orchestras, you cannot deny that Townson's heart was in the right place.

"In Session: A Film Music Celebration" is simply that.  It might not contain the most popuplar soundtracks that Varese has released, but it certainly celebrates film music as an art form.  That alone should convince you to take a listen - then figure out which albums to buy.
